What is Coaching?

The International Coach Federation is the governing body for coaches globally. I figure this is a great place to start! When it comes to the question, “what is coaching?” the ICF says:

The role of a Professional Coach is to:

"provide an ongoing partnership designed to help (their) clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives.

Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has."

For me, coaching provided the answers to how to be happy, peaceful and powerful in my life.  It gave me the tools to go after what I want and the awareness, grounding and personal insight to be able to find peace and balance in the process.

Coaching gave me a very practical and logical foundation that allowed me to make my life work.  It also explained some of the things that had previously seemed like "magical thinking". For instance, the idea that "what you think about grows" seemed to be a bit hard to swallow—I mean come on, how can what I think about ( the stuff in my head that I don't even speak) impact my reality? Well, using basic models and clear examples, coaching showed me why what you focus on creates your life.  There is nothing touchy-feely about it!

Who Hires A Coach?

From my own experience, I have been hired by university professors, entrepreneurs, executives, football coaches and committed individuals- to support everything from increasing sales, to developing leadership ability, to losing 50 lbs.  If we look at the people at the top of any field, 9 times out of 10 they did it with support . Whether we are talking top athletes or academy award- winning actors you will more often than not find a coach behind the success story. While the client’s titles and coaching focuses are diverse, the one common denominator is that coaching is for people who are mentally healthy and actively seeking more from themselves and from their life.

What can coaching do for me?

The answer to this question is really up to you.  What is it that you want for your life?  What are your dreams? How willing are you to go after it full-tilt?

To give you some ideas of how coaching may serve you, here are some of my favorite coaching focuses:

For Your Life:

• Having the experience of being in charge of your life.
• Finding peace, passion and fulfillment in situations that seem frustrating, annoying or hopeless.
• Being able to just be you, showing up comfortably and powerfully in any situation.
• Finding your soul work – work that inspires you – the work you were built for.
• Creating a community that serves and supports your life.
• Building exceptional relationships.
• Finding great love without compromise.
• Identifying and creating space that supports and inspires you.
• Shifting behaviors that are not supporting you.
• Powerfully accomplishing an inspired goal.
• Experiencing the joy, inspiration, and wonder of the world around you.
• Gaining clarity, insight and awareness to powerfully move forward in your life.
• Finding your soul work – work that inspires you – the work you were built for.

For Your Business:

• Creating fun and fulfillment in your work environment.
• Developing ease and competency in leadership.
• Building a close, trusting, winning team.
• Creating powerful, effective relationships in the workplace.
• Achieving exceptional sales and financial performance in your business.

Not a complete list but a good start!

How do I choose the right coach for me?

A really great question! In addition to being a coach I have had several coaches so I can speak from both sides of the equation.  When looking for a coach, you will want to consider both what you want to accomplish and how you want to be coached.  The coach’s experience, general personality, coaching style, and expertise are also important considerations.

Do you work with men as well as women?

A Great question for the gal with the pink site.  While I tend to be quite feminine (hence the pink) and I enjoy networking and sharing time with women, my clientelle are an equal mix of male and female.  I find that a good match depends less about gender and more about the individual. Are they passionate? Do they care about their own development?  Are they ready to take their life or an area of their life to the next level?  If the answer is YES then we have something to talk about.

Is there a spiritual component?

This is a great question. I personally have a belief in what we cannot see and the power of that unseen force.  I delight in living in the wonder of life.  While my coaching itself is not spiritual, I have found that when people come to the coaching process with a faith system this can be a powerful tool.  I have worked with people from several different faiths and I have found that the coaching philosophies are an enhancement, not a conflict.

Is coaching an easy thing to do long-distance?

YES!  I work with all of my clients over the phone.  This is how I have been coached and this is how I work with my clients.  I have clients in Canada and the US, on both coasts so it is a very natural process.  I have also found that the work over the phone is not only convenient for the client, accommodating for busy schedules,  but it also creates an opening for a person to really share themselves in a way that is often actually easier over the phone.

How long and how often will we meet?

Clients are coached for an hour each week, over the phone, the first 4 weeks of the month. As for the duration of our relationship, many of my clients have been with me for 1-2 years.  The minimum time we would spend together is three months.  Three months allows us to get to the meat of what you are going after.  It provides support and coaching to make sure that you do not have just a flash of success, but that you have actually developed the tools and resolve to maintain momentum beyond the coaching relationship.

What does it cost?

While I provide a variety of coaching programs at a variety of prices, in most cases the monthly cost is $1000.00 / month for individual coaching. In addition to the 4 scheduled coaching times, you also get unlimited access to me by email and you can call me for 5 or 10 minute spot coaching between calls, as needed.  It is not uncommon for a client to contact me daily to report on successes or to seek support in holding them selves accountable.  I charge a premium rate and am not the best fit for everybody. If you are looking for a coach at a lower fee, please let me know and we can find you a suitable referral.
