Gifts That Change Lives

Hi guys!

Last Friday I was doing my regular Friday ritual, lunch at my favorite Mediterranean restaurant, Aladdin’s, and then a trip down the street to Bridgette’s for an afternoon of nail papering with wine and trashy magazines, when I stumbled across some really extraordinary holiday gifts.

First, to create some context…years ago at a Barlow Girl concert, a Christian organization called World Vision gave the audience a chance to make a difference for people on the other side of the world.  When they held up the sponsor card for Ontonio Brian from Africa I jumped on stage and started a new adventure in learning more about a world that was so far removed from my own.

For the past several years I have had the privilege of sponsoring Ontonio and his family to support them in having some of the basic necessities that most people reading this email may take for granted.  While I am aspiring to my new home in the forest and moving to a weekly instead of bi-weekly massage schedule, many of these people are challenged with putting food on the table and having clean water to drink.

I regularly get opportunities to provide additional funds beyond my monthly sponsorship but am rarely called to do so.  That is, not until I saw their holiday catalogue and some truly remarkable gift giving opportunities.

.

• For the cost of a night out you can provide a family with a goat and two chickens to provide nutritious milk and high protein eggs.

• For a car payment you can provide a farmer with two oxen and a plow, increasing their productivity by up to 500%!

• For someone with a little more money to spend you can actually provide a family with a house.  They have these wonderful round homes called Mongolian Gers, the building of which, in one story allowed a mother and her children to move out of a one room shack that they were sharing with 10 extended family members.  Imagine. I can barely.

• You can even buy a flock of ducks! (well, you can send 5 but I figure that must almost qualify as a flock.) For most of us we can go to the store and get chicken any time we want.

For most of us we can go to the store and get chicken any time we want.  We can even have them delivered to our door, already cooked, with seasoning and a bottle of coke. This catalogue was a powerful reminder for me of how much we have and how little it can take to make a difference.

As I was having my feet rubbed, drinking my glass of wine, I read on with tears running down my face.  Little by little my sheltered life gets opened up to the struggles of the world, and for this I am grateful.

If you are looking to give some extraordinary holiday gifts or perhaps take on serving a life on the other side of the planet you may want to check out  www.worldvision.org.

Sending gratitude, abundance and awareness.

Joelle

P.S.  World Vision is a Christian organization and some of the money does go to administration and providing religious education in the communities.  From my understanding it is not presented as a “must do” but as an opportunity which the people can take or leave.  Just something I wanted to be sure you were clear on as you make choices about where to share your wealth.  Love to you!

Browsing the shelves of your favorite video store, looking for a little holiday entertainment used to be a family event.  Well, from my latest trip to rent a flick I am thinking you may want to leave the children at home.

Every once in a while I see something worthy of a coach Joelle rant and my latest trip to the video store supplied my latest fodder.

I am basically a happy person (just in case you were wondering).  I like kittens and animated films and cheesy chick flicks and I became clear some time ago that I am not a huge fan of the horror genre (I like to be able to sleep at night and not watch an entire movie through my fingers.)

Now, don’t get me wrong, there is a place for all of it, the good the bad and the ugly.  The thing that is distressing me today is the proliferation of horrifying, gruesome, movie covers laying around the shelves of the movie store.

As I walk the aisles, confronted with that little black eyed child from “The Grudge” and the dirty, torn and bloody fingernails on the cover of “Saw II” I realize that horror is no longer confined to the "horror section".  The new release wall is inundated with vacant bloodshot eyes, shredded bodies, blood and monsters that will have you sleeping with the lights on.

I do not begrudge the movie makers for giving it everything they have got to promote and sell their product and at the same time it has me wondering, when did we make it ok to have these graphic images lining the shelves of a place for family entertainment.

What about the little people? Would I want my 4 year old to come face to face with a red eyed wolf-thing with blood dripping off it’s fangs or the screaming girl, completely covered and waist high in blood?  Nope. Not a chance.

Maybe there is something to do about it, maybe not, but it certainly made me stop and think.

This holiday, make the hot chocolate, grab some popcorn, and send dad out to pick up the movie.

Sending Peace,

Joelle

Results of The Cleanse

December 4, 2007

I want to thank so many of you for asking how my cleanse was going and being a part of my process.  For those of you who are hearing of this for the first time you can read more of my adventures in green sludge by clicking here.

The essence of what happened for me over the 21 days is that I was vegan for a week and then ate only raw fruits and vegetables and nuts for two weeks along with appropriate supplements and it was no big deal.  In the past I really wondered about people who had this type of lifestyle.  I did not understand how they could live without meat or why they would want to.  Coming out the other side I have many new awareness and insights about my body and my overall health.

1) I love the green sludge!  Part of the cleanse regiment was a shake made of “vitamineral green” (every type of green food known to man dehydrated and put in a powder form), lecithin powder (a soy powder that helps metabolize fat), flax seed oil, a banana, water and ice blended.  I enjoy it so much and appreciate the way it makes me feel that I have chosen to keep it as my first meal of the day.

2) I love the other green sludge! Part of the cleanse was to have fresh squeezed vegetable juice daily.  Lucky for me I have a fabulous Mediterranean restaurant around the corner called Aladins and they juice!  When I need a snack I now head over for my $2.50 cucumber, spinach, parsley and carrot juice – heavy on the greens.  I completely love the taste and the clean feeling I get.

3) I can get by with WAY less animal protein!  After 3 weeks with no animal protein, no fish, no cheese, no nothing, I found out that I can live quite peacefully without it.  I never got the whole “rice and beans” thing and how people can live off of that, but now I know a little hummus with bread or rice and beans in a corn tortilla with some veggies is a perfectly acceptable meal!

4) Whole foods rocks!  Not the first time I realized this but the cleanse took me to a whole new levels of awareness.  Now I go to whole foods to pick up things like Almond milk, young cocoanut juice, raw cacao beans and Ezekiel sprouted grain bread as part of the new healthy me!

5) Eating enough organic fruits and vegetables is a full time job.  Part of the education I received on the cleanse was information around enzymes used to breakdown food, how stuff gets in the way of our body absorbing nutrients through the intestines, and the poor nutritional quality of food comparative to 100 years ago.  All of this points to one thing for me; the food guide says 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily and most people don’t come close. Eating fruits and vegetables throughout the day is a conscious choice I am making for my life and my health.

6) All this good stuff is getting me ready for baby.  I won’t go into the details but a few months ago I was suddenly hit with the idea that Jeff and I will be conceiving in February.  Weird wild stuff since this time last year all I could say was, “slow down partner!  I am no where near ready!” Next thing I know I get this FEELING and now it has become a fact, February 18th, right after our anniversary and our two week Caribbean cruise, we are going for it! The point is that while I take on this new level of health for myself, there is no doubt that it could not come at a better time, both for creating a body that breezes through pregnancy and for creating an environment that gives our little one a healthy perspective from day 1.

7) I love routine.  When I share what I took on for the cleanse so many people say they could never do it.  I honestly found it easy, I was never hungry or uncomfortable and I was even able to stay 100% on the program on a trip to Atlantic City to the bar and nightclub conference where the whole show was focused on eating and drinking. As long as I had my plan there was no battle, no hemming and hawing, there was just working the plan.  As a result I have created a new regiment for my regular life that gives me a similar structure for living in alignment with the life, health and body I want.

If any of you are interested in taking on this adventure yourself I highly recommend having a professional there to guide you.  The wonderful woman I had by my side is Janee Kuta-lliano at www.aliveone.net.  She is a raw food guru and a wonderful role model and I plan on cleansing with her again in the spring. Thank you for sharing the adventure!

I welcome questions or comments and hope this brings you one step closer to vibrancy and happiness in all you do.

HUG!
