The International Coach Federation or (ICF)
says that the role of a Professional Coach is to:
"provide an ongoing partnership designed to help (their) clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives.
Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has."

A little about my own journey to coaching:
As I mentioned I was always looking for the answers, always reading the next book, attending the next seminar, all in the hopes of finding "the secret to happiness" or figuring out how to be a "better leader" or finding a man who I would want to spend my life with! Well everything helped a little, but nothing really seemed to help all the way, nothing that is, until I discovered coaching.
Before coaching, all the other stuff seemed either too mundane or too magical. I wasn't interested in "tips and techniques". but I also was not ready to pin all my hopes on the "power of positive thinking" or Feng Shui (no disrespect to either, I think they are both great tools).
What coaching did was give me a very practical and logical foundation that allowed me to make my life work, while it also seemed to explain some of the things that had previously seemed like "magical thinking". For instance, the idea of how "what you think about grows" seemed to me to be a bit hard to swallow—I mean come on, how can what I think about ( the stuff in my head that I don't even speak) impact my reality? Well, using basic models and clear examples, coaching showed me why what you focus on creates your life and there is nothing touchy-feely about it!
For me, this changed EVERYTHING! What happened was not only did I gain the tools to powerfully create my future, but I also gained the awareness to be able choose my level of joy, peace and happiness on a daily basis.
Coaching gave me access to being supreme ruler in my life, with the ultimate say and the ability to create my life my way.
